Sky Mavis, the developer of Axie Infinity, announced it will cease the issuance of Smooth Love Potion (SLP) rewards in its Axie Origins game mode starting January 7. The company cited the need to address automated bot farming and protect the long-term stability of the game’s economy.

- In a letter to the community, Sky Mavis Lead of Growth “Jaatster” explained that player liquidity in Axie Origins has declined over time.
- While the player base shrank, the SLP rewards in Ranked Mode remained unchanged.
- This imbalance reportedly created an opportunity for “bad actors” to exploit the system using automated farming and bots at higher ranks.
“SLP extraction at this scale is harmful to the long-term health of the Axie ecosystem,” the statement read.
The developer noted that while deep game design changes would ideally address these issues, the team has paused the development of new features for Origins to focus on other projects. As a result, halting emissions was identified as the immediate solution to prevent further economic exploitation.
Strategic Pivot
The decision coincides with a shift in the studio’s priorities for 2026.

Jeff “Jihoz” Zirlin, co-founder of Sky Mavis, stated on X (formerly Twitter) that this move aligns with a key theme for the year: “restructuring and re-imagining the Axie economy”.
Token Utility and Status
Following the January 7 update, SLP will no longer be earned through Origins Ranked Mode. However, the token remains functional within the game. Players can continue to deposit SLP to use for crafting in-game items and “morphing” Axies.
Regarding the token’s supply, Zirlin noted that SLP was deflationary in 2025, recording a net burn of 250 million tokens.
The co-founder also outlined upcoming economic adjustments, including changes to AXS token rewards to a “spend/stake only” model and measures to balance the Axie population to stimulate breeding.
